On this day I took a huge chunk out of Brooklyn, also known as Brooklyn Action Corps. I walked from SE Holgate to SE Powell, between Milwaukie Ave and SE 17th.
Brooklyn has a very interesting and early history, having been settled by Gideon Tibbetts in 1851. There are some very early homes from as early as 1886 in this area, and as Tibbetts allowed the Oregon Central Rail Road through his property, an extensive rail yard including the Southern Pacific 4449, as well as the Tri-met Bus Yard. There's really too much to say about the history of the Brooklyn Neighborhood, so read about it for yourself here. The short of it is, it used to have it's own town center where the Ross Island Bridge and 99E are, but alas, all that remains is the Aladdin theater and the few shops along Milwaukie Ave.
Starting from the northern Powell Blvd side, the homes are much older and mostly victorian or turn of the century in nature. As you edge further towards Holgate, they become more 20's -50's, bungalows and a few ranches. I started from Holgate so you will notice the transition from late to early architecture.
I'm not sure I'd ever even driven down 16th before. It is tree lined, with a school park in the middle. A nice previously blue-collar neighborhood, the houses are mostly well cared for and attractive, and it's a pretty neighborhood in general.
